 Post subject: [PROJECT] The Doom Universe

We have decided on a new project - a mod called The Doom Universe. What are the ideas? A partial conversion? A megawad with elements of Doom, Heretic and HeXen? What would we like? I'd like a mod that is doom with some heretic and hexen weapons in it.

Unfortunately I have very little experience/knowledge in Heretic/Hexen.

I liked the idea of being able to do anything and just compiling everyone's wads in the end. This way we don't have to worry about forcing each other's maps to fit in with each other and farther keeps us open to doing anything "reasonable-like."

Themes like that?

I had an idea a long time ago, we pick one of our personal favorite songs and make a map based on the song title. Not unlike the "Doom 2 In Name Only" mod.

Alas, I will not be making a map for "The Funky Gibbon" or "I'm a tea pot."
I suppose some of the levels could well be inspired by songs - it sounds a promising idea.

I like those ideas. I think that for example, we should have perhaps three episodes (but still as maps 1-32), with one episode being predominantly castle, one being alien planet and one being Hell.
Maybe then, we could reshuffle the monsters - e.g. in the first episode, mostly low-level heretic and hexen monsters; then most doom monsters (less barons of hell and cybies); then a combination of all. Weapons should probably be all Doom weapons.

I'll have to pull out if it's a Doom/Heretic/Hexen mashup, I simply don't have them and don't want to rush beating them to get a sense of them before mapping.

Why not just Doom stuff?

I was going for a whole "Doom Universe" thing but I don't think it's that important. We can do plain doom.

So Skibbi and I discussed a bit on Steam.


I thought our theme can be "Nightmare," and with Skibbi joking "let's pull a Quake!" we felt it would be interesting to mix sci-fi and dark medieval aspects for Doom.
For example, Skibbi is interested in making a sci-fi castle.


-Also, we thought a 10-map wad would be good so as to not be overburdened.
8 Maps + 2 secret maps.

-Our 2 secret maps can be based on song titles like what Powerage suggested, and I'm interested in making one of those. These can be more different and experimental, it's okay if they stick out from the others.


I think the Nightmare theme is great as you can make the architecture realistic or very abstract based on what you want. Ideally something scary, or with some unsettling elements.

Yeah, so we agreed on episodic releases, each episode having 10 maps.
Now, do we have any idea of a plot for the end scenes?
