What I don't understand is why Doom 3 ROE, which is a mod is sold commercially?
It doesn't have it's own EXE, it's not standalone, so why is it sold commercially?

Its an expansion pack which was professionally designed by an outside company. Mods and expansion packs are similar, but typically an expansion pack is designed to build upon what the game already has rather than to replace it and is made by professional developers. Mods can be just about anything and are typically made by hobbyists.

But why are expansions used as commercial?
It's just silly.

For the benefit of playing something made by professionals :)

Some people do think that's silly, which is perfectly fine, but there are some who don't which is why there is still a market for expansion packs.

Yeah I'd say the huge difference is the level or professionalism. I didn't like ROE as much as D3, but damn the design was professional.

There is not a single D3 mod that has felt as professionally made as ROE :)

Well there is 1 that's being made, "Phobos," which so far looks like it deserves to be an "expansion pack," but they're taking so long to make it that I have high doubts it will ever see the light of day... in fact Doom4 will be out before Phobos is out

It's not standalone so it shouldn't be sold!

Think of it like this: A typical mod is made by one or more people who are essentially doing it for fun and on a whenever-I-feel-like schedule. If you wanted a guarantee of results, for the most part you'd probably need a professional. That's how expansion packs start, a company realizes that it can make money from making a mod, so they get licensing and jump through legal hoops and then actually pay a full development team to do the work. After its done, then comes your question. If they were to not charge anything, then they've just pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into free software, and no reasonable business would do that. In order to cover the costs they incurred, they charge a relatively small fee for people. People will pay the fee because they enjoyed the original game, the business would have put a good level of professionalism into it, and usually there will be at least a couple ways that it'll end up being better than a typical mod.

As for standalone, that's just part of it being an expansion pack. Its designed to expand on the original game, and more likely than not it was probably part of the agreement with the business that made the original game in order to make them more money.

I understand that there are plenty of people who disagree with this type of business, and there's a very simple solution: Don't buy it. If you don't want to pay money to play an expansion pack, then its a good idea to simply not buy it in the first place, as there will usually be plenty of good mods that already exist that aren't the expansion pack. And if you really want to play it without paying, then you could always pirate it.
